Love In Times of Outrage
Author To Give ReadingDid Alex Haley's Roots leave you thirsty for more—perhaps some payback? Love In Times of Outrage could be the answer. In his third novel, author John Hatch chronicles the exploits of one Catherine (Cat) Morgan. Call her a crazy n**** or not, Hatch says, "Exploits, like invading Mississippi, will crack you up."
To a precocious tot, it seems common sense to snatch a pistol from an aunt about to shoot her cheating husband. Like the earthy women around her, Cat becomes a fast young thing. She keeps her stolen pistol, though, and a white plantation owner bent on rape bites the dust. Growing up in segregated Mississippi with her own child from age 14 will not break Cat's spirit. A country sawbones inspires her to become a doctor.
Escaping to New York's Harlem Renaissance, she charms a California-Mexican writer, but puts him off because more children would prevent her from becoming a doctor. We celebrate the Roaring Twenties and suffer the Great Depression. On the eve of the Second World War, the Red Squad harasses Cat for protesting against the US doing nothing to stop lynching at home.
Pregnancy and child-rearing in the past, a successful NY medical practice allows Cat to open a free clinic in California for workers on a friend's family hacienda. In this time of the grape boycott and Civil Rights, a farm union organizer is mysteriously lynched. Rage of a lifetime overwhelms Cat and sweeps her back into Mississippi to fight the power.
Hatch will give a reading and autograph books at your bookstore. Contact
